Family run painting and decorating firm wins Dragon Award for tackling youth unemployment
A family run painting and decorating firm which trains its apprentices the importance of punctuality, teamwork and rules has won a Dragon Award from the City of London Corporation.
Islington-based K&M McLoughlin Decorating received the Heart of the City award for its five week pre-apprenticeship ‘employability’ programme, which gives locals aged 16-24 practical skills and training to help them into the industry.
The aim is to focus them on the importance of turning up on time and job discipline, ensuring they do not drop out of jobs in the future
Alongside a strong work ethic, training in painting and decorating gives trainees the opportunity to gaining a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card so that by the end of the course, each student will be able to go on site work-aware and ready for further training
-Since the programme started in October last year, 131 young people have completed the course. Out of that, 71 have been deemed employable and 64 have made it into further employment (21 as apprentices)
